New York: Broadway Week and Valentine’s Day

New York can be great fun in the Winter and very romantic for a Valentine’s Day weekend in spite of the cold.

This year, select shows have extended their NYC Broadway Week deals through February 27.

Visiting New York in the winter can be challenging because of the cold but there are great compensations. New York Broadway Week returns this winter with its signature deal: 2-for-1 tickets to some of the best musicals and plays on stage right now. Prefer to splurge? Opt for upgraded seats at $125 per ticket.

Enjoy the following plays and musicals with the two-for-one promotion: Aladdin, The Book of Mormon, Chicago (with Miami’s own Ana Villafañe as Roxie Hart), Come From Away (one of the most enjoyable and profound musicals we have seen), Company, David Byrne’s American Utopia, Dear Evan Hansen, Hadestown, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, The Lion King, MJ, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, The Phantom of the Opera, Skeleton Crew, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

When I visited in October I stayed at the Fifty Suites by Afinia. This hotel, located at 50th Street and Third Avenue, is perfect for visiting attractions on Fifth Avenue, like Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Church, the always beautiful Central Park area of statues of Bolivar, San Martin and Jose Martí, across from the Plaza Hotel. It is also reasonably priced (under $200 for some dates in February), for a 433-square-feet studio apartment that includes a large bedroom and nice-size closet, a kitchen area where you can keep food refrigerated and prepare your breakfast or other meals. Don’t expect a luxurious bathroom. The one we had was very basic. And make sure that you stay on a floor above the tenth floor so you can avoid the terrible repair noises that we heard during the early morning hours (even at 3 and 4 a.m.) because we stayed on the seventh floor.

In November 2021 I stayed at the Knickerbocker Hotel. a historic and completely renovated (2015) Midtown luxury hotel that is also very well located, 6 Times Square. A superior King room will cost $325 per night according to their website (February 2022) for a four-day stay that includes Valentine’s Day. This is a very comfortable hotel with all the amenities expected by sophisticated travelers, including a famous restaurant, Charlie Palmer at The Knick.

For dinner I recommend that you splurge at Le Bernardin by Eric Ripert, one of the great restaurants of the world. Ripert has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation and “Top Chef in NYC,” among other awards.

Buy the New York CitiPass in order to visit various attractions at a reduced price. We chose to go to three attractions: the always fascinating American Museum of Natural History (don’t miss the jewels and precious stones), the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. In the evening catch a show at the American Ballet Theater, a “Must See” — one of the most spectacular ballet companies in the world.

To fully enjoy New York you have to walk its diverse neighborhoods, from the Upper East Side, Midtown, to Chinatown, Tribeca, Chelsea and many other captivating areas. You will always find multicultural restaurants, unique (sometimes surprising) people, beautiful flowers, boutiques, and historic buildings and parks.
